FSS’ prototype is called Pithos and contains a microplasma spectrometer capable of quantifying extremely small total sample amounts of both carbon dioxide and oxygen. The bedside monitor is rack-mounted and has a digital interface for data transfer to a server or external computer.

The monitor is complemented by a soft and flexible gas collector that is attached to the patient’s skin, where it collects and transfers the transcutaneous gas flow through a fluidic system to the monitor for subsequent analysis. The gas collector is a disposable and changed between measurements.
